Summary
Turbine configurations for solar updraft power stations are evaluated through analytical modelling and optimisation: one rotor or two contra-rotating rotors, each optionally preceded by stators. Analysing multiple blade spans and limiting hub reaction alters predicted efficiency considerably. A lone rotor lacking stators performs badly, while contra-rotating machines achieve the best efficiency but spin slowly, demanding higher torque.
