Summary

Two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations of laminar buoyant airflow in a vertical solar chimney for building ventilation assess the influence of heat flux, height and width. Backflow near the exit forms when the chimney is short relative to its width or at high Rayleigh number, cutting the flow rate; moving the heated surface to the opposite wall in one half of the channel removes it and boosts airflow.
