Summary

A simple thermal model of a solar chimney power plant, checked against earlier simulations, is used to simulate how warm air rising from a proposed 200 MW desert plant in western China drives local atmospheric circulation and rainfall. The plant raises the likelihood of rain in dry air, and the influence of radiation, collector size, chimney height, wind and humidity on the rain area is assessed.
