Summary

Using a validated numerical model and a theoretical analysis, the work examines how cavity height, cavity gap, solar radiation and fire size affect a solar chimney in a tunnel used for natural ventilation and smoke extraction. Ventilation scales with cavity height to the power 0.69 and with radiation to the power 0.34. Height and gap matter more than radiation. A model that includes the temperature profiles inside the cavity predicts lower flows than conventional models.
