Summary

Design of a solar chimney for an actual building that must serve both natural ventilation and smoke control during fires, assessed with an experimentally validated numerical model. The chimney delivered about 7.4 air changes per hour in normal use and greatly lengthened safe evacuation time; for large spaces the best cavity width rose to around 1.2 m, and a coefficient rates how each design parameter affects both functions.
