Summary

Building energy simulations in ESP-r compare a photovoltaic-covered roof solar chimney with cross-ventilation and standard ventilation for a single-storey detached house in four climates, using CFD to calibrate the airflow model. The ventilated roof delivered free cooling in every climate and season, driven mainly by the stack effect. Cross-ventilation roughly halved cooling load, and the roof chimney cut up to a further 80%.
