Summary

Proposes an atrium building with a solar chimney that supplies solar-driven stack ventilation in normal use and keeps the evacuation shaft free of smoke during a fire. Scale-model tests and single-zone and two-layer calculations show that smoke exclusion works if the neutral pressure plane stays within the chimney and the leakage openings between the atrium and the shaft are kept below a certain size.
