Current developments, utilization, and effects of phase-change materials integrated with solar chimney: A comprehensive review

This research addresses the growing need for sustainable energy solutions in building design by integrating phase change materials (PCMs) with solar chimney (SC) systems to enhance thermal performance and energy efficiency. Through a comprehensive review of existing studies, this paper evaluates the evolution, application, and benefits of PCM-integrated SC technologies across diverse architectural environments. The findings demonstrate that the integration of PCMs significantly enhances thermal performance by stabilizing indoor temperatures, improving ventilation rates, and reducing reliance on conventional heating systems, which le...

The solar chimney development in Iraq and Saudi Arabia–a review

The enhancement of solar chimney technology and application in Iraq and Saudi Arabia for the generation of sustainable energy is a requirement of increasing energy and environment crisis. The findings reveal that solar chimneys may greatly enhance surrounding temperatures and air circulation. Certain models, such as the 36 m2 collecting area and 6 m chimney height investigated in Tikrit, Iraq, showed good execution under local climate conditions. The study comes to the conclusion that venting contaminated areas, including solar chimney systems, can augment urban air quality in addition to delivering clean electricity technology....

Solar chimney applications in multi-storey buildings: A critical review

As a promising passive ventilation system, solar chimney shows great potential in energy-saving. Although its applications for single-storey building have been extensively explored, no review was found in the literature regarding its applications in multi-storey buildings, hampering its future applications. This study focuses on studying solar chimney in multi-storey buildings, analysing its potential for application in multi-storey buildings, aiming to offer fundamental guide on its future designs and application. This system can substantially enhance the ventilation efficiency of buildings, as well as excellent energy efficiency, ...

Solar chimney power plants: a review of the concepts, designs and performances

This research presents a comprehensive review of solar chimney power plants (SCPP) as a reliable source of renewable electricity generation. Solar chimney power plants differ from other renewable energy technologies because thermal and momentum effects result in 24-h electricity generation. However, they are influenced by a wide range of design, geometrical and operational parameters, and environmental conditions. This review evaluates the design aspects and the theoretical, numerical, experimental, and performance findings in previous works holistically and concisely. The study also extensively discusses the various optimization st...

Chimney shape numerical study for solar chimney power generating systems

A large number of researchers have paid great attention to solar chimney (SC) power generating technology, but only a few have studied the chimney configuration. Taking a 10 MW SC system as an example, the physical and mathematical models illustrating the fluid flow, heat transfer and output power features of the system are established. Based on constraints such as equal chimney bottom section area or equal chimney surface area, the impact of several sizes of three different chimney configurations upon the chimney outlet air temperature and velocity, system output power and efficiency is analyzed and the influence of the height-to...

A comprehensive analysis of time-dependent performance of a solar chimney power plant equipped with a thermal energy storage system

Solar Chimney Power Plants (SCPP) are among the promising solar thermal electricity generation technologies. Equipped with a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system, such technologies can overcome variations in the main driving factors such as solar radiation and ambient air temperature. This article presents a comprehensive semi-analytical model of a TES to predict the time-dependent performance of an SCPP. By introducing a Quality Factor of power generation (QF) that includes energy conversion efficiency and capacity factor, the effects of 15 TES materials have been studied on the plant performance. Results indicate no significant dif...
