Summary

Experiments and 2-D ANSYS FLUENT simulations compare four inlet shapes for the collector of a rooftop solar chimney built over a room model. A vertical inlet gave the highest chimney airflow and velocity, while a horizontal one cut collector performance by about 84%, since most incoming air enters from above the inlet. The authors suggest the canopy area of solar chimney power plants could be reduced.
