Summary

Solar chimneys meant to naturally ventilate classrooms in a new wing of a Washington, DC elementary school were sized through multivariable optimization combining EnergyPlus airflow modelling with CFD. The chosen chimney height and opening areas could give adequate natural ventilation for up to roughly 1,200 occupied hours a year and cut HVAC energy use by as much as 5%.
