Summary
A small-scale salt-water model of a single-room building with a solar chimney, using electrolytic hydrogen bubbles to mimic thermal buoyancy, was tested for the effects of cavity width, heat input, inlet size and chimney height. An optimum cavity width maximises airflow, set by inlet area and height but not radiation, and simple theoretical models tend to overestimate ventilation rates.
